Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 3/02/11
Annihilators #1 by Mike Mignola
While it’s always lovely to see Mignola illustrating the covers of his own properties, it’s a delicious treat when he does the occasional covers for the bigger publishers. Take this one for the Annihilators; featuring two of the best characters from Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot and Rocket Raccoon, looking completely badass. It makes me want to battle Thanos while bellowing “I AM GROOT!”
5 Ronin #1 by David Aja
While the design layout of this cover slightly reminds me of the Immortal Weapons covers, it’s David Aja at his finest. Logan looks quite comfortable in his ronin attire, and it’s a look we’re familiar with back in the 616 universe. Just as Marv would have fit in well with the gladiators during Roman times, Wolverine would have fit in perfectly during Feudal Japan. Aja captures the feeling of a lone disciplined warrior with the use of warm earth tones, and the end result is just stunning to look at.
Batman: Streets of Gotham #20 by Dustin Nguyen
At first glance, this cover creeps me out. Gas mask plus syringes filled with red poison equals bad memories at the doctors office, but that’s just me. Seeing the players of this issue highlighted in the eye-sockets is a nice touch, followed by the remains of the Batman floating in the sea of red. Great execution, wonderful concept, just a homerun through and through.
Darkwing Duck Annual #1 by James Silvani
Bravo to James Silvani for the brilliant homage to Bolland’s The Killing Joke! It’s equally fitting that Crackerjack is to Darkwing as the Joker is to Batman. While Darkwing Duck is suppose to be on the lighter side of things, this cover immediately informs you to hold on to your butts. No, Gosalyn doesn’t get shot and paralyzed by Crackjack, but I’m not going to lie when I say I was almost expecting it when first seeing this cover!
Thunderbolts #154 by Arthur Adams
While it says the cover was done by Greg Land, that’s a boldfaced lie. It’s done by the magnificent Arthur Adams, and even says so in the lower left-hand corner. Look at all the beautiful details given to such a hideous creature. It certainly conveys the mystery surrounding such a strange and fascinating beast, that you almost forget it’s a violent and gruesome killer (at times). This would make a cool glow in the dark poster if done right.

YO JOE!
Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 2/16/11
Daredevil: Reborn #2 by Jock
This cover makes me happy. Don’t get me wrong, Jock’s covers always make me happy, but because of the yellow background, I find myself warm and full of smiles. If that sounds slightly odd, then I’ll go with explanation number two; Daredevil is depicted beautifully in the image, and the yellow background really makes him pop. He’s currently a torn soul still trying to redeem himself, and Jock’s raspy interpretation of him really sells it to me. Are you currently holding out for a hero? Then this cover is for you.
Jennifer Blood #1 by Tim Bradstreet
When you have Tim Bradstreet involved in a Garth Ennis project, you know that you’ll be getting some kick-ass covers for sure. With the first issue of Jennifer Blood, we’re treated with nine (you read that correctly) variant covers, and this one is my absolute favorite of the bunch. It’s this cover that gives us the introduction to this new character, and with Bradstreet’s dark and gritty style we get the idea that she’s the kind of broad who isn’t afraid to get a little dirty (or bloody). Jennifer Blood is if the Punisher was a housewife living in the suburbs, and the cover clearly illustrates just that.
Venom Deadpool #1 by Skottie Young
I’ve always been a huge of Skottie’s style. While I do enjoy his interior art in comics, what blows me away every single time are his gorgeous covers. His covers are so good, I’ll buy the crappiest comic just for his cover alone. With this cover, you have the perfectly executed hybrid of Venom and Deadpool. Their costumes really were made for each other. With the addition of the grotesque green tongue, this cover screams “I’d look badass hanging on your bedroom wall”, or at your local punk rock venue.
S.H.I.E.L.D. #6 by Gerald Parel and Dustin Weaver
I nominate this cover to be the image for the first trade. It informs the reader of which main characters are featured, and it’s done in a beautifully almost painted style. The details of each character is enticing and fascinating at the same time, as it keeps you guessing who’s a good witch, and who’s a bad witch. Weaver’s been delivering some great art in general for this series, and this cover proves it a hundred times over.
Thunderbolts #153 by Greg Land and Dan Brown
Believe me, I did a double-take as well when I saw this awesome cover was done in part by Greg Land. Excuse me? Baking powder? Yes, that Greg Land. Sure it’s easy to make a crack that we just haven’t found the porn site where he traced the heroes from yet, but I think it was nothing but honest-to-goodness hard work this time. Is this a new renaissance for Land? As long as he keeps creating covers like this one, I’ll have no more qualms with the man’s work.

Fast Five picks include Avengers #9 (Marvel), Scalped #45 (Vertigo), Thunderbolts #152 (Marvel), Detective Comics #873 (DC), and Fantastic Four #587 (Marvel).
Heads-up number two; I slightly rant about Marvel’s PR and the Fantastic Four this episode.
