Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/4/12
iZombie #21 by Michael Allred
Why communist ghouls want our purple-skinned protagonist to drink-up the brain coffee, I haven’t a clue. What I do know is that this unique cover intrigues me enough to keep on reading, and question if Starbucks has such a flavor of coffee. Would brain coffee be a bold, or a medium blend? Would you get smarter after consuming a pot, or would you gag after the first sip because you aren’t undead? Now I’m thinking of what you would name the brand; Exotic Einstein? Abby Normal Noche? Quick, someone get me Mr. Starbucks on the phone! Oh, and the cover looks great.
FATALE #1 by Sean Phillips
The latest pulp noir series from Brubaker and Phillips, and OH MY RAPTOR JESUS WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?! Did Al Capone have his way with a Beholder one night, skip town, and not pay child support? I’ve seen nudibrachs that were cuter than that…thing. Back to the cover, Phillips does an extraordinary job with this variant, really giving the viewer a better idea of what to expect inside. You thought you saw the crazier side of Brubaker and Phillips with Incognito, but this cover alone ensures you that you’re sailing into uncharted (yet exciting) waters. If the bullets in that gun don’t kill you, that face certainly will!
Penguin: Pain and Prejudice #4 by Szymon Kudranski
“He’s more machine now than man. His mind is twisted and evil.” – Ben ‘Obi-Wan’ Kenobi
Graveyard of Empires #3 by Paul Azaceta
Why anyone would want to try and grow human skulls as a viable crop is beyond me, but crops are crops, and you must constantly spray them with pesticides to keep the locusts away. What I really like about this cover is the striking use of white on the black and red background. The nice little touch is the glowing red eyes of the skulls, which seem to follow me no matter where I walk around the room. As soon as I heard issue three was coming out this week, I instantly knew I’d be in store for treat; a Paul Azaceta cover (plus interior art!).
Rachel Rising #4 by Terry Moore
It’s the simplicity of this cover that really makes me smile; red background, and charcoal pencils (I’m assuming). While red eyes usually symbolize evil, green eyes can have the same effect…if you’re a GINGER! If those jade eyes aren’t selling you on the whole ‘sinister’ vibe, then perhaps the cattle skull mask she’s wearing will seal the deal. Comic book cover, or metal album cover; this image can work both ways.
Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 12/7/11
Sweet Tooth #28 by Jeff Lemire
This is why beastiality is wrong. In all seriousness though, I really like the old-timey feel to the cover. It conveys that this is Gus’ real mother, and his place of birth is in Alaska (I hear that he can see Russia from his pouch!). I’m always a fan of blood-splatter, so just to see it sprayed across the picture sends a very powerful message to the viewer of what else to expect this issue. Even from an early age, Gus doesn’t go looking for trouble, he appears to walk right Inuit.
Hack/Slash #10 by Becky Cloonan
‘Cover B’? I’m sorry, but that must be a mistake. For you see, Becky Cloonan is one of my favorite comic artists of all time, because she is constantly amazing with her very rebellious-yet-always-sexy style. So while I agree that her influence goes hand-in-hand with a character like Cassie, you do not give her second billing with an alternate cover. ‘Cover B’? The mere thought of it makes me want to puke, eat the puke back up, then puke it all out again. Look at this cover, now look back at me. Go Google ‘Cover A’, then look at ‘Cover B’. See the difference? You’re right! Cover A should be switched with Cover B, because people like Becky Cloonan. If you’re currently in the proximity of someone who disagrees with me, eat their soul, and tell them that Cammy sent you. All kidding aside though, Cloonan really needs to do more Hack/Slash covers! Love it!
iZombie #10 by Michael Allred
If I was strolling through the supermarket and spied this cover on the rack by the checkout stand, I’d do a double-take, throw my head back and laugh, then add it to my items. I don’t care if it’s ’15 Items or Less’, that old hag behind me can wait another goddamn minute, because I don’t go around telling her to hurry up and die already! Anyways, I like how the cover feels a bit dated, yet the colors are still the right kind of vibrant. It nails all the usual questions and headlines you see on Cosmopolitan and Vogue, only Allred is obviously having fun with creating the drama with his own characters. I can see this as a poster on the walls of every The Walking Dead and Dawn of the Dead fan for sure.
Venom #10 by Tony Moore
Symbiotes of Anarchy, on FX. Think about it, then start sending me my royalty checks for my brilliant idea. You’re welcome, America.
Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 2/2/11
Superman 80-Page Giant 2011 #1 by Dustin Nguyen
So obviously there’s a lot going on with this cover. However, since it’s a special issue filled with a variety of different Superman stories, it’s very fitting. You’re immediately swarmed with all sorts of wonderful colors that cause your eyes to dart across the cover rapidly, not having enough time to focus on one character. When you are finally able to rein your retinas in, you treated to the many beautiful illustrations by Dustin Nguyen and his takes on the Superman cast. Villains, heroes, sidekicks, all look lovely on a white canvas. The use of color really makes each of them pop-out, and it’s a very pleasing cover from top to bottom. This would look great as a poster
iZombie #10 by Michael Allred
This cover is very clever; my eyes instantly inform me that there is nudity on this cover, and it’s female nudity (the best kind). No skimpy outfits, no nude-colored costumes, no huge…tracks of land; an actual naked woman, and since it’s so dark, you can barely make-out her nipples. And I’m not the only one noticing; the three vampires behind her are quite aware of her lack of clothing as well. So while myself and the vampires are both hungry, and for different reasons, I applaud Allred for producing a cover so intriguing and so well designed. This cover makes necrophilia look hot.
Hellboy: The Sleeping And The Dead #2 by Mike Mignola
The covers for Hellboy are usually quite simple, but it’s the amount of detail that Mignola puts into each one that really makes it special. You see the iconic Hellboy stance, giant fist balled-up and ready for action, then just horror and supernatural icons surrounding him. Coffins, giant skulls, and bats? Something’s up, and you just know you’re in for a fun adventure! While I do always love Mignola’s covers, he really needs to take some time-off from the movies and just draw another arc or two. I miss his style.
Iron Man: Legacy #11 by Juan Doe
The first time I saw Juan Doe’s work, I was instantly mesmerized by his style. It’s bold, energetic, and eye-popping every single time, and this cover is one of his best pieces in my opinion. The symmetry and abstraction rolled into one forms a unique sense of unity, and yet still maintains order. The man is mysterious, for I know virtually nothing about him, but I’d love to see more interior art by him for sure. If you want a treat go pick-up the Joker’s Asylum: Scarecrow one-shot. He did the art, and it was gorgeous! Just like this cover.
Secret Six #30 by Cliff Chiang
Have I mentioned that it’s fantastic that Cliff Chiang is back and better than ever? Because it certainly is. For the past year he’s been doing a spectacular job on the covers for some of my favorite series (Justice League: Generation Lost), and once again he’s doing the covers for Secret Six. The intensity of Catman combined with the shoot-em’-up styling of Deadshot results in the cover seen here. Chiang not only kills it on colors, but with the energy in this image as well. Fingers-crossed for more Secret Six covers in the near future done by him!
