Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 11/16/11

Catwoman #3 by Guillem March

Batter up! The blood splatter, the ripped costume, the watercolors; all a magnificent job well done by Mr. March! The dried mascara is also a nice, subtle touch.

John Carter: A Princess Of Mars #1 by Skottie Young

“This must be a Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”

Godzilla Legends #1 by Arthur Adams

I’ve been loving  the Godzilla covers because they keep hiring talented artists to tackle them. When drawing gigantic scaly monsters, details go a long way. Adams does a superb job drawing the smallest scale, to the curliest of spikes in this cover. My Godzilla rogue’s galley knowledge is a little rusty, but what I do know is this Anguirus fellow is one badass looking dude! Hands-down my favorite cover of the week.

Wonder Woman #3 by Cliff Chiang

Very simple design; broken clay statue, bad slithering omens writhing forward. I especially like the inks, with the thicker outlines on the snakes.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 6/29/11

Xombi #4 by Frazer Irving

Instantly you’re stuck in a trance, as you’re slowly hypnotized by two empty glowing eye sockets. If that’s not creepy enough, you realize there’s a stronghold built into the top of the skull. That means the floating skull of death is enormous, and is probably the evil-doings of Obama! But seriously, Irving illustrates the terror well in the faces around it, as if they too don’t know what to make of it. If murder/mystery novel covers taught me anything, it’s that a skull is a sign of nothing good. One that big, with a kingdom resting on top? We’re all going to die!

Gotham City Sirens #24 by Guillem March

When it comes to illustrating the Joker, you must make sure he looks completely insane. With this cover in particular, March absolutely rewrote the definition of ‘insanity’. Mr. J is completely off the deep end in this cover with the strait-jacket still on, guns a-blazing. The multi-colored Clayface behind him is a nice touch, and the same goes for Harley at his side, loving her man’s maniacal mayhem in all its glory. Normally the question “Do you feel lucky, punk?” would come into play with a situation like this. However, in this case you’re royally screwed either way. Beautiful cover!

The Strange Case of Mr. Hyde #3 by M.S. Corley & Jim Campbell

With the first cover of this series, we were introduced to a man of science. With this third installment, the cover conveys a very different sort of man. A man who enjoys guts and blood, and other disgusting things of that nature. A man who probably didn’t floss when growing up, and ate no vegetables whatsoever. The main thing I’ve been enjoying about these covers are the borders; they have a very Mark Buckingham type of feeling to them, showing that other images can work with the main one front and center. Go ahead and try to follow the intestines around the edges, you won’t be able to!

Scalped #50 by Jock

Finally, we see the cover live-up to the title itself. Someone was scalped, pure and simple. Add some great splatters here and there, some red spilling down the face, the slash in the title lined-up with the slice, and this is my favorite cover of the week hands-down. A great cover to a monumental issue.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 6/8/11

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #1 by Sean Murphy

So while some comic book fans can grow weary of Nazis in their comics, I for one still enjoy them as the villains as long as the story remains interesting. Vampires, and Nazis? You have my complete and undivided attention! Sean Murphy throws a lot of imagery at you with this cover, causing your eyes to dart to and fro to try and get a sense of what’s happening this issue. To me, it tells of a story set in WWII with Pearl & Skinner battling against Nazi Vampires. Murphy’s radical art style sets the perfect tone of what to expect in the interior pages. With the swastika shown, are they allowed to sell this issue in Germany?

Batman and Robin #24 by Guillem March

While this is a very intimidating cover of the Red Hood having his way with the dynamic duo, what I enjoy the most is Damian not going down without a fight. Batman succumbs without any gestures to indicate he tried to prevent this choke-out from happening, and then you have Robin fighting quite literally tooth and nail. The anger, frustration, and determination we can see in his face is hilarious, yet dark at the same time. March does a wonderful job in the tiniest details as well; I found myself observing the soles of Robin’s boots for quite some time, inspecting every crevice. And how about the muscles on Red Hood? Not too shabby! So while you may think this cover isn’t the next Sistine Chapel, you can at least take joy in the fact that Damian ain’t no wimp!

PunisherMAX #14 by Dave Johnson

Three colors is all it takes for you to enjoy this cover; red, black, and white. Let’s first take a look at the wonderful warped giant skull, looming down at Frank like an acid trip. And what’s that dangling all around the skull? Why, meat hooks of course! Shiny white chains and hooks, with the negatives highlighted when going across the skull. Speaking of negatives, the skull on Frank’s chest is also one, and it does look rather cool. Dave Johnson was the perfect choice for cover artist on this series, and he hasn’t let me down yet. Then again, I can’t think of a single Johnson cover outside of PunisherMax that has let me down! The dude is that good.

Scalped #49 by Jock

At first this cover amazed me, then as I started looking at the red glowing eyes within the trees, it freaked me the fuck out! It’s like those demon eyes are staring right into my soul, judging me. Maybe it’s because I was caught off-guard that I’m still a little spooked by this cover. First of all, you have this massive tree with branches that zig-zag all over almost like lightning, followed by the fact that owls aren’t usually regarded as the best omens. Are they restless spirits? Do they know something I don’t know? Why does Catcher have glowing red eyes too? I’m still uneasy about this whole cover, but I don’t hesitate for an instant to claim it as a thing of beauty. I’m fairly certain I have a COVER ARTIST OF THE YEAR category, and Jock is just slaying the competition.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 5/18/11

Batman: Gates of Gotham #1 by Trevor McCarthy

Apparently no one told me that Cliff Chiang and Dustin Nguyen had a baby, and he grew-up to become Trevor McCarthy. The thing I enjoy the most about this cover is the different line textures, and how they scatter across the page every which-way. Add the infused colors, and it all comes together perfectly. I also think I’m a sucker for beautifully rendered stained glass designs, because I recall highlighting another cover last week that featured stained glass as well. Great stuff.

Rocketeer Adventures #1 by Alex Ross

The first comic book movie I saw growing-up was Disney’s The Rocketeer. True Story. Because of it, I was inspired to follow Dave Stevens’ series when I got older. Back to the cover, this is my favorite cover of the week. Alex Ross is one of the best known cover artists out there, and he did a truly spectacular job going above and beyond with this cover in particular. The shininess of the leather, the reflection in the eye-socket, and the cherry on top being the endless waves of clouds below. Almost brings a tear to the eye, because this cover encapsulates everything that is The Rocketeer. A beyond stunning tribute for sure.

Hulk #33 by Gabriel Hardman

The combination of Hardman’s gritty style with bright vibrant coloring makes the entire image just pop, treating the viewer to another great Hulk cover. Rulk may be down, but he’s definitely not out no matter how many villains seem to be teaming-up to finish him off. The rasping state of the Hulk-busting armor, the Steranko-like design of the siren’s costume; it makes my eyes want to dart all over the image eating every little detail up. Hardman helps convey that while it doesn’t appear to be going in Rulk’s favor, the tables can turn in his favor at any moment.

2000AD #1734 by Garry Brown

I see Jim Steranko influence in this image, as well as Sean Phillips. It doesn’t feel like a swipe at all, but a wonderfully executed image by Garry Brown perhaps tipping his hat to both artists. It’s a very beautiful design, using only whites, blues and violets. The images that speak volumes to me are the ones that use little to no black at all (think Asterios Polyp). The circles almost give her a halo-type visual, perhaps communicating she’s the last hope for Mega-City One? All I know is; I’m intrigued. I’d gladly hang this as a poster in my room if it was big enough.

Batman and Robin #23 by Guillem March

A very nice homage to Frank Quitely’s original cover for Batman and Robin #1 from the series relaunch in 2009. Can you spot the difference? If you guessed dead Batman and Robin by Jason Todd’s hand, you’re right! Now while we don’t actually see Todd as The Red Hood in this issue, I’m still a big fan of his costume design. The elongated shiny helmet, the giant red smoking guns, our fallen heroes slowly dying before him, it all has such a dominating feeling upon first glance. A cover and design so fine, Quitely should feel honored by March, because it’s a very cool cover.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 4/20/11

Gotham City Sirens #22 by Guillem March

We’ve all been there; torn between both good and evil, stuck in the middle with that hard decision to make; drown all the lawyers, or just half to send a message to the others? With this cover it beautifully illustrates the situation Selina finds herself in this issue. While both wings are radically different, they fulfill that sense of unity perfectly. So while Catwoman is battered-down once again, you would think she’s figured out what side she’s on by now.

28 Days Later #22 by Sean Phillips

Sean Phillips is such a professional when it comes to catching my attention with these covers. Black and white loose-sketch in the foreground, skies of different reds in the background. Together, they make every detail of the black and white pop-out at the reader. What I particularly enjoy about the muddled reds in the background is they give me that sense of post-apocalyptic dread, that the situation is completely not okay anymore. Not that it has been for the past twenty-two issues, but that’s not the point! This is simply a beautiful cover.

Green Lantern #65 by Doug Mahnke and Keith Champagne

The thing about this cover is Hal Jordan fits-in with the Sinestro Corps perfectly, that I had to do a double-take to see what series I was reading. Obviously, the dominant color is going to be yellow, but it’s spread all over the cover in a way that doesn’t make it tiresome to look at. I just love Mahnke’s bold line-work and little details throughout, that this cover in particular would be one badass poster. That’s the great thing about Jordan; he makes any color look good.

Dark Horse Presents #1 by Paul Pope

I remember when this title was first solicited many months ago, and people were getting excited for both the Frank Miller and Paul Chadwick covers. I’m sorry, but the real hidden gem is this Paul Pope cover. Does it have anything to do with one of the stories inside? Who cares! Look at this glorious cover; we have a mysterious looking pirate-tiger-lady with her pet tigers among the tiger ruins. The attention to details in the cover are mesmerizing, especially in the faces of both tigers and in the ruins behind them. Just like the tigers, Paul Pope can’t change his stripes; he’s still a fantastic artist.

Superman / Batman #83 by Travel Foreman

I’ve often lain awake at night wondering what it would look like if Superman and Batman were transported into Middle Earth. I then look at this cover, and all those long sleepless nights are suddenly put to rest. First of all, we have the goddamn Batman riding what appears to be a dragon / Nazgul hybrid. If anyone is capable of saddling one of those beasts, it’s Batman. Then we have Superman charging with a claymore-sized lightning sword, looking more extremely awesome than usual. He doesn’t even need a sword, but the fact that he’s proudly got one on display should make you fear him even more! Sauron better watch himself, because he’s got two super Hobbits on their way to Mt. Doom in a hurry, and they ain’t no Sam & Frodo!
