Posted by Cammy in Weekly Reviews on August 21, 2011
No Pick Of The Week, but we have a wonderful art-driven Fast Five! Picks include X-Men: Schism #3 (Marvel), Avengers Academy #18 (Marvel), Fables #108 (Vertigo), Daredevil #2 (Marvel), and Hulk #39 (Marvel).
Egads! Only one weekly video review show remains!
Cammy’s Comic Corner – Episode 172 (6/26/11)
Posted by Cammy in Weekly Reviews on June 26, 2011
In this fairly disappointing episode, I discuss only two titles, because these two were the only titles I somewhat enjoyed this week. I discuss Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates #5 (Marvel) and Fables #106 (Vertigo).
This episode has been brought to you by, THE SQUEEG!
Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 3/23/11
Batman Incorporated #4 by J.H. Williams III
America; fuck yeah! Patriotism aside, the cover illustrates beautifully which characters to expect in this issue, and where it’s going to take place. While we all know J.H. Williams can draw the hell out of Batwoman, it’s interesting to see her as a footnote on the cover, where the main character on display is none other than Batman. I especially love how the logo and seal of Gotham flow along with the American flag, giving a great sense of unity.
FF #1 by Daniel Acuña
My favorite of the sixteen covers. Okay, there weren’t sixteen covers, but didn’t it seem like Marvel was taken over by Dynamite or Avatar this week? All joking aside, I’ve always loved Daniel Acuña’s art, and I especially love this cover of the Future Foundation he illustrated. It does a wonderful job establishing the new status quo, costumes and all. As for the costumes, I’m personally a fan. I really like how Reed, Sue and Ben each get their own highlighted hexagon on the outfit. Very unique design. And for Spider-Man? Yes it feels like he has a new costume every week, but this one looks great on him so I’ll give it a pass (this time).
Fables #103 by Joao Ruas
Simple, yet effective. The current story arc is tackling superheroes for the first time in the Fables universe, so what better way to illustrate the cover than with a John Byrne homage cover? Usually in a situation where one rips-open their shirt to reveal what’s underneath, it takes place at a strip club or a phone booth in Metropolis. For this cover, it’s the logo, and a damn fine shiny one. This looks like a job for, Joao Ruas!
5 Ronin #4 by David Aja
Another week, another beautiful Aja cover. Believe me, I’m not selecting his covers on purpose. Every week I browse online the comics that came out, and dammit, so far Aja’s 5 Ronin covers almost get me every time! This gem for instance; the girl with the butterfly tattoo (isn’t that a Stieg Larsson novel?); the use of violet with the butterfly being displayed on a bare back really captures your attention because it’s calming and beautiful. Then all of a sudden you notice the katana but it’s too late! Damn sexy assassins get me every time!
Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 3/9/11
Birds of Prey #10 by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau
Whether you’re reading this fine series or not, you have to agree that this is one gorgeous cover! It perfectly illustrates Oracle’s role in the DCU, and how many people have come to depend on her over the years. Lau’s take on every character is golden, and no space goes to waste. The darker tones indicate peril, while the glowing Oracle seems to be the light that shines through the darkness. Absolutely superb cover!
Punisher MAX #11 by Dave Johnson
This series is still coming out? All kidding aside, one of the reasons I enjoy Punisher MAX so much is Dave Johnson’s covers. Always intriguing, this one conveys Frank Castle in deep trouble, with the fantastic detail of the Bullseye skull transforming and flowing into dripping blood when it reaches the teeth. It’s attention to detail like that which makes Dave Johnson the go-to man when you’re in need a bitchin’ cover.
Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #2 by Chrissie Zullo
This right here, just like all other of Chrissie Zullo’s work, deserves poster treatment. Hell, it deserves museum treatment, with the posters available for purchase in the gift shop. The ying and yang of both Cinderella and Dorothy looks so peaceful, despite the violent imagery of a showdown with pistols. Both ladies sexy, yet deadly, is really what hooks you. With the swirling dragon in the background, this cover would make Da Vinci cry with happiness.
Batman Incorporated #3 by J.H. Williams
So while Batwoman may be delayed until next year, at least we can still be amazed by JH Williams’ wonderful covers for Batman Incorporated. His covers are like snowflakes; every one of them amazing, yet no two are alike. The man is constantly breaking the rules of design, and in the process teaches others that it’s alright to paint outside the lines and do your own thing. Your eyes gravitate to so many images on the cover, that it’s difficult to decide where and what to focus on and enjoy first. I demand a book of all his Batwoman covers, stat!
Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/26/11
Uncanny X-Force #4 by Esad Ribic
So I have just been loving these Esad Ribic covers for the past few issues. The man is a genius with the paint brush, and this cover proves it with all this action going on. I especially love how the lights fit beautifully with the darks, highlighting the good, the bad, and the extremely evil. Doesn’t hurt that it’s such a fantastic series too. Esad Ribic needs to do EVERY Marvel cover as far as I’m concerned, because he’s just that good.
The New York Five #1 by Ryan Kelly & Brian Wood
While Ryan Kelly did do covers and illustrations for Wood’s The New York Four series at MINX, it’s nice to see him doing what he does best; creating spectacular images like this one for comics. The mellow yellow highlighted by the dark red / black blend does a magnificent job leading the eye, and the style allows us to see every detail. Add the skyline of New York City in the background, and you’ve got yourself a real winner on your hands. If I worked at Vertigo, I’d recommend to my bosses that this be turned into a poster. I could easily see this hanging-up on my wall.
Detective Comics #873 by Jock
This is a perfect example of why Jock is such a master of his craft. First of all, he draws a damn good Batman; it’s not your Adam West Batman, or your typical Jim Lee looking dark knight. No no no, Jock gives you the gritty goddamn Batman that kicks ass and takes names. And besides the wonderful simplicity of this cover, I especially like the movement we see. When you take a photo of moving lights at night, you get the cool effect of zig-zagging lights. Jock has captured that perfectly, and even added a lens flare for good measure.
Avengers #9 by John Romita Jr.
John Romita Jr. makes me smile every time I see his art work. It’s not a conventional style, and that’s what I enjoy the most about it. It’s simply quirky and unique in it’s own way, and yet it still works in hooking different audiences. This cover immediately catches your attention with all the pretty colors from the dreaded Infinity Gauntlet, and usually if someone in particular is wearing it, there’s a good reason to have the same expression on your face as our heroes do on this cover. Chaotically divine!
Fables #101 by Joao Ruas
Like many of you, I was upset when I heard James Jean was no longer going to be doing covers for Fables. Who could possibly hold a candle to him? Then comes along Joao Ruas and I find myself asking, “James Jean who?” This cover in particular is very breathtaking to look at, and it’s not just because this is my first time tripping on acid and reading comics. The style is so soft that I’m afraid I’m going to break it just by looking at it! And the colors do a wonderful job blending together in certain areas. You don’t have to be a fan of comics to look at this cover and know beauty when it’s right in front of you. It’s covers like this one that have me thankful for Joao Ruas spending some of his time entertaining us mere mortals.
