Reviews for 3/3/10

Adventure Comics #8 – The first two stories in this issue I enjoyed, it was the third story with the Science Police officer that I didn’t care for. Braniac’s plan to go stop his great grandfather sounds intriguing, and the different artists in this issue did a great job.

Astro City: The Dark Age – Book Four #2 – I really like the character of Mirage; cool outfit, nice looking hover board. Very TRON-ish. The brothers hell-bent on getting revenge on the man who destroyed their lives get one step closer in this issue, and might possibly be in for more than they bargained for. Good issue, I had fun reading it.

Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love #5 – Fairy Godmother as the villain?! An awesome reveal I did not see coming! I’m interested in this new European Fabletown, and hope it’s revisited in the main Fables series! Very enjoyable.

Conan The Cimmerian #19 – New arc, and we see some familiar faces from arcs of old. The art in this issue does a great job setting the tone of the story, and that’s not always easy to do with Conan. If you’ve been liking this series so far, you’ll be liking this issue no problem.

Deadpool Team-Up #896 – Didn’t really seem like much of a team-up with the Living Colossus. Deadpool just piloted a submarine and moved some limbs, really. The Living Colossus did all the real work. Also, where the hell did these Zerg/Hive type sea monsters come from, and out of the blue no less?!

DEMO 2 #2 – Creepy, creepy issue. I didn’t know what I was expecting, but cannibalism never once crossed my mind (initially)! The one scene in particular that made me squirm was back at his bathroom apartment after the first date. It was one of those instances that you had a horrible feeling what was about to happen, but still read it anyway. Bravo to Cloonan’s beyond-gorgeous art (as usual), and Wood’s sick mind. This new volume of DEMO is nothing like the first volume, that’s for damn sure.

Detective Comics #862 – While Jock’s art looked wonderful, not much in the way of excitement gripped me in this issue, which is a first for this run.

First Wave #1 – Interesting. While I’m familiar with all the better known characters, my knowledge when it comes to Doc Savage is limited. Either this is going to be an awesome series with these different characters interacting with each other, or it’s going to come-off as a 12-year old from the 80’s’ wet dream. With the creative team on this title, it certain does have potential.

Girl Comics #1 – I had fun with this first issue! First of all, that cover by Amanda Conner is awesome. As for the stories inside, my favorites were the How To Catch A Predator-esque story with The Punisher, and Doc Ock out shopping. I look forward to seeing what the creative women in comics have in store for us next issue.

Green Hornet #1 – Me likey! I’ll admit I have almost no background knowledge of Green Hornet, but that doesn’t matter because Kevin Smith does a wonderful job making this first issue accessible to new and old readers alike. We see the original Green Hornet, then we flash-forward to the next generation, making the son of the legend someone we can connect to. If the rest of the series is anything like this first issue, I’m onboard 100%. Too bad it was never made into a movie.

Invincible Iron Man #24 – Brilliant issue! Fraction did such a superb job with the conclusion of the Stark: Disassembled arc, that this has become a must-read for Iron Man fans and those wanting to know more about the character. The imagery, the action, the story, all fantastic, all do the character justice and bring Tony back on the road to redemption. Can’t wait to see how this all plays out next in Siege!

Jack of Fables #43 – As far as I’m concerned, we can follow this Jack for the next hundred issues. The tales are exciting, and feel fresh and new. This series reminds me why I love comics.

Jonah Hex #53 – The story, as usual, had a nice twist of sorts at the end. My only problem with this issue was the art style; wasn’t my favorite.

JSA All-Stars #4 – Skip it.

Justice League: Cry For Justice #7 – Loathed the story throughout this series, but I gotta say, the women have looked fantastic since the first issue.

Nemesis: The Imposters #1 – Didn’t like it, didn’t like their version of the Joker.

Prelude To Deadpool Corps #1 – You know what? It wasn’t bad like I thought it would be. If Anything, it was pretty humorous in parts. I enjoyed Dave Johnson’s tell-all of the covers at the end, and can’t wait to collect them as they come out. The combination of them all it pretty funny and cartoony; just like Deadpool.

PunisherMAX: Butterfly #1 – Can’t really say I got it. Did she want to see him again, that’s why she wanted to publish it? Only he was capable enough to kill her? Either way, this was another ‘miss’ for me in a long line of MAX one-shots. If it’s not Ennis or Aaron, don’t bother reading it.

Realm of Kings: Son of Hulk #2 – Skip it.

Sweet Tooth #7 – Nice to see more backstory on Jepperd and his wife. The little reveal at the end must have made it even harder for Jepperd to lose her. As for Gus, it’s going to be interesting to see what kind experiments they’re going to perform on him. Good issue.

The Amazing Spider-Man #623 – I’m a fan of this new creepy Vulture. What I’m a bigger fan of? Azaceta’s gorgeous art! Every page is eye-candy.

The Boys #40 – Goddamn, does it suck to be in Hughie’s position. In love, and has no clue she’s one of the Seven. Things are going to eventually end in blood and tears, I fear. As for the Homelander, those pictures are very gruesome. He deserves to go down hard.

The Mighty Avengers #34 – A part of me is disappointed that this issue is happening before Siege and before Hercules is killed, but other part of me is having fun with this new team. It took me a few issues, but I’m starting to enjoy it more than New Avengers. As long as the stories don’t fall too far behind current events, this could be quite the epic run.

The Sword #22 – Finally, the battle we’ve all been waiting for begins! The ultimate bloody catfight between god and mortal takes place in New York, and the world is their battlefield. Lots of fucked-up shit happens in this issue, including a uterus being ripped-out and stomped on! Only two issues left, and I simply crave more!

Ultimate Comics: Avengers #5 – Awesome issue! Everything from the history of the Red Skull’s kills, to Captain America on his way to save the day. You don’t need a Cosmic Cube to make this series any better.

Ultimate Comics: New Ultimates #1 – The story wasn’t as horrible as I predicted it was going to be. I think I know what distracted me from it; Cho’s beautiful art. Every woman in the issue is extremely exhilarating to look at. However, remember when Cho was on The Mighty Avengers all those years ago, and how long it took those issues to come out? Let’s just say if you planned on waiting for the trade, it wouldn’t be a bad move.

Wolverine: Weapon X #11 – It was fun to see Steve and Logan go on a pub crawl in four different time zones, attempting to get plastered. Meanwhile, cool Terminator-esque sub-story with the Dethkloks. Again, this is the only Wolverine book you should be picking-up for your Logan fix.

X-Men: Hope #1 – Goddammit! These are just the reprinted Hope & Cable stories from the back pages of that one comic! At least Marvel didn’t have the balls to slap a $4 price tag on it and left it at $3. Still, it’s a waste of money if you already have the issues they originate from.

Can I just go have a nap now? I don’t want this week’s load to kill me for good.  Discuss it on the Forum!
