Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 8/21/13

The Outliers Chapter 1 by Erik T. Johnson

It’s both the tone and the style that really intrigues me, for it appears raw and sporadic upon first glance. As soon as the eyes have had a chance to take it all in, sure enough shapes and beings start to emerge from what was once thought to be simply just a scene in nature. The twilight colors play very well here, focusing on the main character at first and slowly making the giant Sasquatch creature present. Looks and feels like an independent comic, so I have no problem immersing myself into something new that looks this good.

The Mice Templar Volume 4: Legend #6 by Skottie Young

Two weeks in a row now Skottie Young has made my list. He’s just that good. With this cover in particular the color scheme is magnificent, and Young really does a great job focusing all the energy and attention on the battle-hardened rodent front and center. The frayed cape, the frazzled whiskers, and the death glare makes this mouse a force to be reckoned with. My favorite detail of all is the rain drops only showing up on both mouse and log. That effect really ramps up the level of intensity on this cover.

KISS Kids #1 (Subscription Variant) by Bruce Timm

Good to see the Joker enjoying retirement and touring as the lead singer of KISS. Admit it, the Joker was the first thing you thought of when you saw this cover too, right? Not that I’m complaining, for just the mere look of the Joker suddenly makes Gene Simmons look like a badass, and not a heavy metal clown who has all STDs known to man. Those are some sweet shoes too, but they probably wouldn’t have them in my size at the local Payless. The cherry on top? The Kirby crackle of course.

Adventure Time #19 (Cover C) by Matt Sheean

LEMONGRAB VERSUS BMO? UNACCEPTABLE! While the Land of Ooo is a magical place full of wonder and adventures, at the same time it’s a terrifying realm where Jaeger BMOs and Lemongrabs fight to the death. I would hate to be a citizen of the Candy Kingdom in the background, for if one of those giants fall everyone’s going to be as flat as a stick of bubblegum. The grime and detailing of BMO’s suit is awesome, and Finn and Jake trying to help out just makes me laugh because it’s pretty obvious they can’t do much this time around. Beautiful cover, I’d love to hang it on my wall.

100 Bullets: Brother Lono #3 by Dave Johnson

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. The green, white and red of the Mexican flag, the Chihuahua sticking out from his shirt, and the calm demeanor of Brother Lono as he smokes his stogie in the middle of a firefight just makes this cover the bee’s knees (or how they say it in Spanish, “ser la hostia”). The detail I immensely enjoyed was the skull and crossbones as bullets; that image makes you feel good upon seeing it, for you know exactly was it means/stands for. Fantastic job by Johnson for conveying it in that manner, for once again he proves why he’s the best in the business.

My ‘The Untamed’ review is up at Bleeding Cool!

As most of you know, I write for Bleeding Cool. This week, I was given the opportunity to review The Untamed by Sebastian A. Jones and Peter Bergting (Stranger Comics). Sebastian A. Jones has created quite a rich fantasy world, and it will no doubt flourish from here on out.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 8/14/13

Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem #3 by Dave Wachter

Clayface wishes he was this cool looking! The glorious coloring and texture of the golem front and center really allows the audience to observe every rock, root, and detail as it plays off the black and white background. Just look at the size comparison with the little kid; from this specific moment in time, either the golem could be a gentle giant, or is about to get violent. It’s obviously a very powerful being with its presence alone. Either way, it’s eerie and beautiful and definitely catches the eye in a good way.

Uncanny X-Force #10 by Kris Anka

I hate it when I get a nasty brain freeze when I’m slurping my ICEE too fast! I can’t help myself; it’s just so damn delicious! Anyway, I really like the psychic projections attacking the team, and their extremely radicalized style. I believe the projections are actually the latest Katy Perry song, as they attack the brain as relentless ear worms. The contrast of the characters and the projections is what I enjoy the most, for it really highlights Anka’s chops as a well-rounded artist. Quick X-Force! Suck your tongues to the roof of your mouths!

The Fearless Defenders #8 by Mark Brooks

One of my favorite things about these Fearless Defenders covers is that Mark Brooks is obviously having a blast making them. They haven’t felt dull or uninspired, for every month Brooks has brought a different twist and constantly keeps things fresh. Take this cover for instance; fans of both sketches and final product can appreciate this cover together as it focuses on the many designs of Valkyrie. Something about blue pencil always gives me a little thrill. I don’t know why, but when it’s applied skillfully, it really makes the sketches look amazing.

Lost Vegas #4 (Variant) by Skottie Young

Every Lost Vegas variant cover has been a joy to look at, but Skottie Young always manages to bump things to the next level with his beautifully eccentric designs. With a sci-fi story such as Lost Vegas, there’s no harm whatsoever when bringing the madness. Take this high class lady for instance; her hair is curled, twisted, and resembles wires almost, while she looks forth though her extravagant mask and sips her fruity cosmic drink of sorts. Her pet looks just as deranged, with the haunting eye and jagged antler. The cherry on top? The wallpaper design, for it really brings the cover together. Young’s style may be wild, be he gleefully plays on the border of conventional/unconventional.

Red Sonja #2 (Variant) by Nicola Scott

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. Sean Phillips once again—*whisper whisper* What’s that? It’s not Phillips? But it looks like—*whisper whisper* Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Nicola Scott, bravo for producing such an amazing looking cover! The tones and textures, not to mention coloring, threw me for a loop, for I’m so used to seeing that similar look in all of Phillips’ Fatale covers, but it looks stunning when applied to Red Sonja as well. Sonja looks ferocious as she goes in for the kill, sticking the audience with the pointy end. She is truly a warrior woman in this pose, and not to be messed with. It’s nice to see her as a force to be reckoned with, and not like some tart appearing on every Zenescope cover in a skimpy outfit.

My Rohnert Park City Council coverage is up at the Sonoma State STAR!

This semester I’m both Arts & Entertainment and Online Editor at my college newspaper the Sonoma State STAR. I’ll have a group of staff writers I’ll be overseeing, but every now and then I’ll be submitting a review or article if we need to fill space. Be sure to write to the editor if you like what you see! In the meantime since the paper doesn’t get published over the summer, that means there’s going to be an abundance of exclusive online content!

The Rohnert Park City Council voted 3-0 yesterday on an urgency ordinance to double the current 60-day party penalty for both SSU students and residents. New and returning students should read this latest online exclusive from yours truly and think twice before partying like it’s 1999 this upcoming semester.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 8/7/13

The Manhattan Projects #13 by Jonathan Hickman

Glad to know that several pairs of Vans checkered slip-ons were recycled into making this cover. It’s not entirely checkered, which makes the overall design that much more intriguing and appealing. Is there a pattern, or is it all just random? If there is a method to Hickman’s madness, I’m not sure I could nail it down. What I do know however is this cover is geometrically gorgeous, with its overall simple yet effective aesthetic.

Prophet #38 by Jim Rugg

See, if Kirby Crackle was included in my geometry and algebra textbooks, I would have passed those classes without any problems. Instead, my experience with mathematics is much like this cover if you were to swap John Prophet with me, and that tiny pink Earth destination in the triangle with me passing the class. It wasn’t an enjoyable journey, but I eventually overcame and conquered (barely). But enough about me; this Jim Rugg cover is absolutely splendid!

Swamp Thing #23 by Guillem March & Tomeu Morey

I don’t know if Constantine ate one of Swampy’s psychedelic roots, but it looks like he’s having one hell of a bad trip. The vibrant colors of the tentacled poppies really catches the eye, as well as the tiny details for each flower with the shadowing and texture. Is this cover considered tentacle porn for botanists? Very creepy-yet-beautiful cover, and I find it enjoyable to see a new take on Swampy (what big white teeth you have!).

The Shadow #16 by Tim Bradstreet

With that Manhattan Projects cover it was squares, with Prophet it was lines and shapes, and now with The Shadow it’s circles. I hope Bradstreet didn’t have to rely on just a compass for this cover, otherwise it would have taken him all week. Black, red and white always work well together, and yet Bradstreet somehow makes it look more fantastic than usual. His red shadow in the main cluster of white rings is my favorite little aesthetically pleasing detail.

Trillium #1 by Jeff Lemire

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. The mix of science-fiction and what appears to be a battle from World War I crossover exquisitely, enticing the viewer to pick-up and see what Lemire’s latest series is all about. To add another layer of mystery, the symbols along the right-hand side of the cover appear to be Native American or Mayan or some ancient culture, which prompts me to wonder if time travel is somehow involved. The watercolor background is brilliant, and the watercolors in general are dazzling. Mr. Lemire, you once again have my undivided attention.

My ‘I Am Mixed’ review is up at Bleeding Cool!

As most of you know, I write for Bleeding Cool. This week, I was given the opportunity to review I Am Mixed by Sebastian A. Jones, Garcelle Beauvais, and James C. Webster from Stranger Kids. It perfectly educates while entertains, and should be in every library, classroom, and bedroom worldwide.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 7/31/13

2000AD Prog 1843 by Carl Critchlow

I just love the annoyed look on Dredd’s face, as if being pulled-under by giant tentacles is a regular occurrence for him. He’ll dive in begrudgingly, but he can’t deal with the situation for too long because Project Runway is on at 9 and he forgot to record it. I’m a fan of sinister looking tentacles to begin with—you could say I’m a sucker for them—so somebody please remind me to ask Templesmith for a Dredd vs Tentacles commission next convention.

Collider #1 by Nathan Fox

One of things I love about Nathan Fox is the vibrant colors he incorporates into his covers. For a first issue, getting people’s attention is a huge concern, otherwise it may come across as just another comic book to them. Hot pink with black and yellow? You definitely have my undivided attention. I’m also a fan of the character being upside-down, because it adds more intriguing questions and motivates me even more to pick up the issue. Well played, Fox.

House of Gold & Bones #4 by Jason Shawn Alexander

Painted covers always get mad-respect from me, because the artist put in a little extra time and effort to bring us something so brilliant. Take the demonic tongue dude and his bald eagle hybrid buddy (who reminds me of one of the characters in Kirkman’s Ultimate X-Men run); bastards cast out from hell and surely up to no good, and yet beautifully illustrated. The pale ghostly figure in the graveyard is a nice contrast, for this cover as a whole is extremely well-done.

X-Men: Legacy #14 by Mike Del Mundo

Forget Monopoly, forget chess, and forget Chutes & Ladders; the game all the cool kids play is Candyland! Del Mundo does a marvelous job adding depth and dimension to the board game with this cover that I took extra time reading each square just to see what the stakes were. It seems a lone powerful mutant is able to create a destiny for everyone else, so passing GO and collecting your $200 suddenly seems like the least of your worries.
