My ‘Sullivan’s Sluggers’ review over at Bleeding Cool!

As most of you know, I write for Bleeding Cool. This week, I was given the opportunity to review the oversized Sullivan’s Sluggers graphic novel from Mark Andrew Smith & James Stokoe.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 2/20/13

judgedredd4cvrb

Judge Dredd #4 (Cover B) by Garry Brown

I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before, but Garry Brown is a fantastic choice for Dredd. Brown’s raw and gritty style works wonderfully for this cover, for Dredd looks damn good in the middle of this firefight. The stubble, the sparks, and the vibrant color choices are what make this cover amazing, and I want to see Brown on more Judge Dredd because of it. Hop to it, IDW!

hellraiserthedarkwatch1

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: The Dark Watch #1 (Cover C) by Frazer Irving

It’s no question that Irving does eerie really well, and this cover in particular highlights the different kinds of eerie he excels at. “What’s in the box?! WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!?” comes to mind, for it appears to be something so terrifying that even Kirsty Cotton is taken aback by the contents. Hopefully that scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark won’t happen next. Beautiful colors and textures, for Irving knocks another variant out of the park.

batwoman17

Batwoman #17 by J.H. Williams III

Another epic cover by Williams, no doubt about it. Like a phoenix rising from the flames, Batwoman is depicted as being unstoppable as evil perishes around her. The serpents charred bodies are a great visual, and as usual I love how her hair matches her cape. She is woman, hear her roar.

greenlanternnewguardians17

Green Lantern: New Guardians #17 by Aaron Kuder & Wil Quintana

Kyle engulfed in a mosaic of colors makes this title worth talking about again. I could care less about the event labeled at the top, but this colorful illustration definitely caught my eye in the shop this week. It was a good decision to keep the background bare for this, for it makes Kyle ‘pop’ that much more. I’m kind of hoping he explodes, just to see the colorful macabre aftermath next issue.

deadpool5

Deadpool #5 by Geof Darrow

It’s the glorious intricate depictions of man and machinery from Darrow that make me long to see this as an action figure. Deadpool is a one-man battle station, and looks damn good with that rusty bucket of bolts strapped to his back. Space, the final frontier, had best watch its back! I wouldn’t mind seeing this as a poster hanging on my wall.

sacrifice5variant

Sacrifice #5 (Jade Edition) by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Ritual animal sacrifices never looked so cute! This is a variant cover doing its job in attracting attention towards the series, for if a guy like O’Malley is doing the creators a solid with this illustration it definitely intrigues me now. It’s not like O’Malley does a variant cover for just anyone, for it’s rare to see new work from him as he works on finalizing his next series Seconds. The dead animals alone are worth your money, as well as the cute bloody warrior woman that just made PETA foam at the mouth.

darkhorsepresents21

Dark Horse Presents #21 by Greg Ruth

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. I was a fan of Alabaster last year because of the beautiful art and twisted creatures, and this cover reminds me of how much I’ve missed it. The creepy mermaid trying to submerge her prey in the muddled waters is hauntingly gorgeous, and the bit of blood in the water really adds to that unclean feeling you get when viewing this cover. Arms, hair, and flippers/legs are entwined, truly showing the struggle for survival in depths unknown. Ruth really gets this series, and is a complete master with its execution.

My ‘Superman, Orson Scott Card, and Homophobia’ article is up on BYT!

While I normally whore myself out to the usual websites, I always have a special place in my heart for the sluts over at Brightest Young Things. This week, I wrote about the controversy surrounding Superman and Orson Scott Card. Spoilers: Card is a gigantic homophobe.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Homophobia!

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 2/13/13

bedlam4

Bedlam #4 by Frazer Irving

I think a villain tends to be even creepier when you can’t see his face. Even if he slightly reminds me of Mysterio, I’d be too paralyzed with fear to make such a remark. The eye really focuses on the cool grey tones, then suddenly take notice of the brightly colored bloodstained chairs at the bottom. The addition of the pink light pouring through the windows in the background step-up that level of suspense, for nothing in this cover puts you at ease. Everything is twisted and terrifying, and only a master such as Irving can take you there.

change3

Change #3 by Morgan Jeske & Jordie Bellaire

Bellaire’s colors alone really sell this cover for me. Starry nights in her hair, and blue skies across the eyes. A woman of nature? Probably. With a pristine white cover engulfing the rest of the illustration, the woman pops that much more, and makes it oh-so aesthetically pleasing to look at. Simple, beautiful, and a job well done.

theendtimesofbramandben2

The End Times of Bram and Ben #2 by J.A.W. Cooper

At first I thought Chrissie Zullo had illustrated this cover, but upon further inspection that isn’t the case. Could have fooled me, for the art style reminds me of a blend of Zullo and James Jean, which is certainly high praise I know. The asymmetrical yin-yang type of design is intriguing, as well as the tattoos and outfits on display. I want to know more about these characters, which is exactly what a cover is supposed to do. Bravo, Mr. Cooper!

fatale12

Fatale #12 by Sean Phillips

I guess she weighed the same as a duck. Like Irving’s cover at the beginning, I love the mixture of greys and the sharp contrast of reds and warmer colors. The fire slowly eating away at her is horrifying, and you can clearly see it in her face. The red glow in the windows conveys that sinister feeling, as you helplessly watch this woman burn before you. What did you expect? She did turn me into a newt (I got better).

starwars2

Star Wars #2 by Alex Ross

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. Much like the first cover, this one continues punching you right in the childhood (in a good way). Alex Ross knows how to cram in several different characters and scenarios into one cover, and yet keeps it entertaining and exciting as hell! Like most people, I’m a big fan of Boba Fett, so just seeing the Slave I hot on Solo’s tail is simply riveting and spectacular. So much awesome in one cover, how can you not read the story on the inside?!

wintersoldier15

Winter Soldier #15 by Declan Shalvey & Jordie Bellaire

Haha, remember when I thought Winter Soldier #14 was the last of the series? Turns out I may have misread, and it was in fact the last of the Brubaker & Guice run. My bad. Anyway, turns out it was for the best because now the awesome covers can continue on! While I love the blues and reds being incorporated into this cover, the combo of the two slightly reminds me of the Free States from D.M.Z. for whatever reason. Bottom-line is, this is a wonderful cover, and I hope Shalvey & Bellaire have more coming down the line.

thunderbolts4

Thunderbolts #4 by Julian Totino Tedesco

The thing I love about this cover is the gamma-powered Madman is so powerful, he’s sucking the color red out of all the Thunderbolts (their team colors are black and red). Raw annihilation as chaos reigns supreme. Like the rest of the Thunderbolts, I’m completely blown away by this intense cover.

dialh9

Dial H #9 by Brian Bolland

Crisp, yet creepy; Bolland’s specialty! I do appreciate his clean and brisk designs, then to include something radical like an ant’s head certainly captures my undivided attention. However, if he was going for a human/insect hybrid, the leg count doesn’t add-up (insects = six legs, arachnids = eight or more). But since Bolland is such a legend in the industry, I’ll let it slide this one time.

diadelosmuertos1

Dia De Los Muertos #1 by Riley Rossmo

Ah yes, Señor Rossmo and his muy delicioso artwork. A project like this is right up Rossmo’s alley, for the themes and stylings of the Dia de los Muertos are his specialty. The skull face paint, the cooler tones injected with bits of warmer tones, and the sketchy skeletons in the bottom half there all really capture that essence of what the holiday is about. I was giddy as a señorita when I first saw this cover in previews. ¡Viva Riley Rossmo!

colder4

Colder #4 by Juan Ferreyra

I get the chills just looking at this cover. It’s incredibly eerie to me, with all the intricate veins flowing throughout his body like that. The white-hot heart seems to causing the steam to rise, as the golem slowly stirs. It’s as almost that the body was frozen, and might crack with the sudden addition of heat coursing through his veins. This cover reminds me of a more undead take on the Katy Perry song; “Cause you’re hot then you’re cold / You’re yes then you’re no / You’re in then you’re out / You’re up then you’re down…”

buffywillow4

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow – Wonderland #4 by David Mack

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down! If it has David Mack attached, chances are it’ll be my favorite cover. This one is no exception, for Mack has been absolutely slaying these Willow covers from the very beginning. I demand framed posters of each and every one of these! They’re just so beautiful, and I’m captured by their spell every time I glance at one. The colors, the design, and the illustration all just sing in perfect harmony to my eyes, and I never want this series to end because of it.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/30/13

adventuretime12variant

Adventure Time #12 (Cover C) by Lilli Carré

Symmetry; totally algebraic! It’s the simple-yet-mesmerizing design of this Adventure Time totem pole that captured my heart. Jake’s wacky arms loopty looing all over the place, the dueling hair colors of Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, and the cherry on top being the unimpressed look on Lumpy Space Princess’ face (“Oh my glob! This totem pole is sooo lame!”). Colorful and friendly, this cover could double as a poster if you get an appropriately matching frame. The only thing missing in my opinion is the star of the show, Gunter.

beforewatchmendollarbill1

Before Watchmen: Dollar Bill #1 (Variant) by Darwyn Cooke

Dollah, dollah bill, ya’ll! It’s a shame Dollar Bill never survived long enough to see the Wu-Tang Clan perform; he would have been a fan. The image of a shattered piggy bank has never been more appropriate, especially when Dollar Bill is the piggy bank in question. He should have ‘change-d’ his outfit when he had the chance! Like in The Incredibles, capes will always be dangerous. Next time you’re about to add one to your attire, stop and ask yourself, “What would anti-cape spokesman Dollar Bill say about this?” And then remember that Dollar Bill can’t say anything about it, because he’s dead. From getting his cape caught in a revolving door. He never put his money where his mouth was (because he put it in his chest instead).

hawkeye7

Hawkeye #7 by David Aja

You would think Hurricane Sandy could have been avoided if one of the Avengers was brave enough to ask Thor, God of Thunder, or Storm of the X-Men to make it go away. But no, instead it’s Hawkeye’s problem to deal with. Surely one of his arrows is modified to battle hurricane winds, right? Anyway, beautiful cover design, and great use of typography. The red hurricane icon beams like a beautiful (yet deadly) beacon, with New York strategically placed in the foreground. If given the opportunity, I bet Aja could hammer out these covers until the end of time, and each one would still be gorgeous.

invicible100cvrb

Invincible #100 (Cover B) by Cory Walker

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. I think it’s truly brilliant, and I’ll tell you why. Yes, it looks like just another superhero cover as the hero takes on his legions of villains, but then focus on Invincible’s pose; it’s the exact same one from issue #1 (also illustrated by Walker). Mind = blown. It’s simple, yet amazing because this entire time he’s been ready to battle the hordes of evil-doers he’s collected during his time as a superhero, and the thought never crossed out minds when looking at that first issue’s cover. It also shows how much Walker has improved as an artist all these years, so it’s a win-win for everyone. Well player, Walker. Well played indeed!
