Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/23/13

Winter Soldier #14 by Daniel Acuña

I’m just an absolute sucker for Acuña’s art, it’s not even funny. Even with this simple looking design, I’m entranced by every minute detail; the bleeding country, the abstract dripping blood, the intensity in both their eyes. It feels like the more complicated their relationship, the wilder things are in the sack. It may also be with this cover that I’m pumped for the show The Americans next week, and the intensity that was the Cold War. It was a good run for Brubaker and Guice, and this was a great cover to end with.

Masks #3 (Variant) by Jae Lee

Sometimes a cover is sexier when you just let your imagination run wild. After a hard day of fighting crime, sometimes you just need to let the girls breathe. Jae Lee definitely knows how to illustrate a beautiful woman, and with nothing else on the cover to distract from the heroine in question, it allows the viewer to really study every curve and color choice. I’ve really been enjoying his variant covers ever since this series started, because like Francavilla, Lee knows how to make pulp enticing.

The Massive #8 by J.P. Leon

I love J.P. Leon’s raw energy he incorporates into every one of his illustrations. The layout for this cover is fantastic as well, for every fragment highlights something different. You can feel the intensity in every panel, as the coloring helps dictate the mood as well. Beautifully executed, wonderfully thought-out, this cover is truly the cat’s pajamas.

Young Avengers #1 by Jamie McKelvie & Matthew Wilson

Speaking of awesome layouts, how about this beauty from McKelvie & Wilson? It reminds me of a Grand Theft Auto cover, only more colorful and friendly. Every character and their color have something to bring to the table, and the slanted design keeps the overall feeling exciting. I even left the banner at the bottom alone because it almost feels like it belongs with this particular cover. Marvel should definitely use this image as the cover to the first trade paperback, because it’s just too amazing to pass-up!

Saucer Country #11 by Ryan Kelly

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down! Nothing creepier than aliens mixed-in with some fantasy. The symmetry alone is gorgeous, as well as the design for every wing. And that’s quite the innocent looking specimen in the middle, as she’s now a part of a collection for the rest of her days. It always goes back to the hatred towards Lepidopterists, and questioning how they are able to kill something so beautiful just for preservation’s sake. That pin to the foot looks particularly uncomfortable, unless it’s more along the lines of fairy acupuncture. Eerie-yet-enticing cover, and a job well done by Ryan Kelly.

Double Feature: Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates #20 by David Yardin &
Batwoman #16 by J.H. Williams III

Two beautiful covers, both involving serpents and the heroes who fight them. With Yardin’s cover I love his use of water colors, and every painstakingly illustrated scale and muscle. It’s by far my favorite Ultimate Comics cover, because usually they tend to look rather ugly across the board. With Williams III’s cover, I like the rippling of Batwoman’s cape, and the different shades of red that are produced. Also the skull eyes of Medusa are a nice touch, as she watches on with that malicious glare. If only Captain America, Batwoman, and Wonder Woman were to team-up and slay all the snakes together! Now that would be a comic I’d read in a heartbeat!

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/16/13

Captain Marvel #9 by Jamie McKelvie & Jordie Bellaire

Usually I’d still be bitching and moaning when a prominent character gets a costume change, but for Captain Marvel here I’m still ga-ga for it nine issues in. It could be McKelvie’s style (that always tickles my fancy), but for this cover in particular I like how the starry night helps fill-in her figure. The power she’s wielding is also a nice touch, as she goes to infinity and beyond. Very aesthetically pleasing overall, and definitely grabbed my attention on the shelves.

Comeback #3 by Michael Walsh

Warmer colors make my soul happy. I’ve been really enjoying these cover layouts from Walsh, for while each issue has the trademark multicolored abstract panes, it’s always something different and enticing. The gun, the damsel in distress (there’s a large gun pointed at her; how is she not in distress?), the flow of the image on a white background; all just simply fantastic!

The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 by Francesco Francavilla

I cannot stress enough how happy I am for Francavilla and his own creation being published at Dark Horse. His style and their content were just made for each other, and the stars really aligned quite nicely for pulp and noir lovers everywhere. This cover is thrilling, as the intricate design of the maze hammers home the meaning of the title “No Way Out.” Adding the whole feel of a long lost pulp hero with the design and layout is the icing on the cake, for I can see some Billy or Tommy rolling this issue up and hiding it under their bed. That Eisner insignia is on that cover for a reason, folks.

Saga #9 by Fiona Staples

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. Twistedly erotic, this homage to the Fabio romance covers from decades past is the perfect way to sum-up the relationship between The Will and the Stalk. While meant to be sexy, I can’t help but chuckle at the serious tone that’s supposed to be implied. A love story with six-pack abs, multiple arms, and multiple eyes. Are your panties moist yet? Mine certainly are.

2000AD Prog 1815 by Darren Douglas

Dredd in action always makes for an excellent cover, especially when the situation calls for jousting with guns. Watching scum fly left and right as they eat both pavement and bullets is disgustingly beautiful, as Mega-City One bustles on in the background. This would make for a great poster on any comic lover’s wall!

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/9/13

Star Wars #1 by Alex Ross

With the launch of a new series, who better to illustrate your cover than Alex Ross? Now while it seems Ross is already illustrating every other cover for every other series nowadays, it’s the epicness of a franchise like Star Wars that really has him bringing his A-game. You can tell just by looking at this cover that he put some blood, sweat, and tears into it, getting the reader all excited because this is Star Wars, the thing of our childhoods. Love it or hate it, I dare you to admit you didn’t get a tad-bit pumped when you saw this cover, thinking of all that potential. Great illustration, and every child should have this poster hanging on their bedroom walls. The Force is strong with Ross.

Adventure Time #11 (Variant) by Kevin Wada

As most of you know, I’m sometimes a fan of covers that are a little bit artistically different (in a beautiful way). Take this interpretation of Adventure Time by the talented Kevin Wada; gorgeous, isn’t it? The tattooed Marceline is my favorite, but both ladies look nothing like their cartoon selves which makes it that much more awesome as they fly on the back of Lady Rainicorn, hair endlessly flowing in the wind. Although the facial expressions on Finn & Jake remind me more of Shaggy & Scooby, this cover is definitely a bizarre masterpiece, one I would love to own as a print.

Sweet Tooth #40 by Jeff Lemire & Jose Villarrubia

With the final issue of this amazing series, I can’t help but give Jeff Lemire props for his tip of the hat to the very first issue. I’m a fan of harkening back to the beginning, because while it’s only been four years, it definitely feels like a lifetime. Gus looks old and decrepit, with wrinkles covering every inch of his skin; nothing like the Gus we first saw eating a candy bar back in 2009 with bits of chocolate smeared on his face. The leaves were much greener back then as well, but alas, age catches up to everyone and everything. This is a very nice cover to end with. Thanks for the memories, Lemire.

X-Men: Legacy #4 by Mike del Mundo

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. It’s not just the radical puzzle design that swept me off my feet, but also the exotic blend of colors. The pinks and yellows really play well together, with a little electric blue thrown in for good measure. I know putting a puzzle together can sometimes feel maddening, but it appears Wolverine is taking it rather personally. No Logan, you can’t just cram the pieces together to make it fit! Silly Canadian. The menacing eyes amidst the chaos are the cherry on top, for there’s a lot to take in and enjoy with this cover. Bravo, Mike del Mundo, for your cover has officially intrigued me to buy and read this comic.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 1/3/12

Batman Incorporated #6 (Variant) by Juan Jose Ryp & Nathan Fairbairn

It’s no secret that I love Ryp’s elaborately detailed artwork. Reading Black Summer for the first time just completely blew me away, and I’ve been following his work ever since (checkout Clone from Image). Doing a variant cover for a Batman book certainly is a titillating endeavor, and I immediately want him working on a Bat book. Think of the potential! The Man-Bats and their veiny wings, the cloth on the two individuals front and center; this cover is so enjoyable to take in. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go start that petition.

Punk Rock Jesus #6 by Sean Murphy

But Jesus, you’re doing it wrong! Go home Jesus, you’re drunk! All kidding aside, what an awesome cover to end this epic miniseries with. Our Father, who art a punk, Oi Oi Oi be thy name. Just the combination of a crucifixion on an upside-down crucifix is a great concept, and it’s beautifully executed by Murphy in this cover. This is definitely my favorite cover of the series, and hopefully will become the cover for the trade as well. Such fantastic imagery!

Morbius: The Living Vampire #1 by Gabriele Dell’Otto

Y’all know me; I’m a sucker for painted covers. I think it’s because I can imagine one day striking it rich, and buying the original painting and framing it on my imaginary wall. Dell’Otto definitely has a knack for paints, as can be seen here with Exhibit A. I never cared for Morbius in the comics, but seeing this interpretation of him coming out of the darkness definitely gave me the chills. I’m a Ginger, but even I’m not that white! The claws, the teeth, the red eyes; all deliciously terrifying, and makes this comic that much more intriguing.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow – Wonderland #3 by David Mack

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down! I was such a fan of the second cover, that I eagerly awaited what Mack had in store for the next issue, and was not disappointed. While last time I talked about how awesome it must be for Alyson Hannigan to remain forever young in the comics, this cover brings to mind a different thought of being forever immortalized in comics; how does one feel seeing their naked body illustrated on a cover? Mack’s interpretation of Hannigan’s is gorgeous here, but would she agree? What modifications would she make if any? “Yup, you got the legs right, and maybe be a little more gracious with chesticles?” Bottom-line, I’m in awe of its beauty, and want it hanging on my wall in a frame. Everything from the colors to the soft line work is just perfectly planned.

The Fury of Firestorm the Nuclear Man #15 by Dan Jurgens & Ray McCarthy

Danger! Danger! High voltage! When we touch, when we kiss. While there’s no kissing going on between these two, sparks definitely are flying. What I’m instantly drawn to isn’t the skeletal remains of Firestorm, but rather the majestic blue electricity and excessive Kirby krackle. My eyes wander the lightning like a maze, constantly exploring every possible path. Naturally, they all end up at the same place, his fried remains, but I honestly forget he’s there. Everything surrounding him is just so hypnotic, that I almost forget what title I’m picking up. Great stuff, Jurgens & Company.
