Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 11/23/11

The Flash #3 by Francis Manapul

Falling in unison! First of all, I love the diagonal flow of the image, and how it still manages to balance with the negative space. Then we have the colors; the vibrant crimson of the scarlet speedster as he attempts to reach a friend in a sea of purple and white. This cover reminds us all how beautiful watercolors can be when done right. It’s obviously a strength of Manapul’s, and he’s well aware of it.

Diablo #1 by Joseph Lacroix

I know I’ve seen Lacroix’s style somewhere before, but I just can’t put my finger on it at the moment. What I really like about this cover is the raw edginess of Lacroix’s style, which is slightly similar to some of the artists over at Dark Horse in my opinion. The attention to detail is superb, and even the use of cooler colors makes each object and individual pop-out at you. I’m not sure if this is a comic based on the video game or what have you, but I know the cover alone intrigues me to pick it up.

Dark Horse Presents #6 by Fabio Moon

I think what I enjoy the most about this cover is the image of the great unknown lying in wait before you. Do you chart your own destiny, or do higher beings make that decision for you? Everything to the stone carvings to the gondola make me smile, for Moon is just one of those artists who always excels on every point.

The Shade #2 by Cully Hamner

If you look carefully in the background, you can see very detailed and intricate mosaic work. It’s the little things sometimes that make it all worth while. That’s not the only this I like about this cover though; I also have a fond appreciation for the great bird head cane handle, and the overall color scheme  for the cover. Shade himself is a dark being, always finding himself surrounded by warmth it seems. Very simple yet gorgeous cover, and a reminder of Hamner’s fantastic style.

Cammy’s Comic Corner – Episode 191 (11/20/11)

It was an extremely light week for me. Pick Of The Week goes to Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo for Batman #3 (DC). Terrific Two picks include Avengers Academy #22 (Marvel) and Catwoman #3 (DC). Hopefully next week will be much heartier.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 11/16/11

Catwoman #3 by Guillem March

Batter up! The blood splatter, the ripped costume, the watercolors; all a magnificent job well done by Mr. March! The dried mascara is also a nice, subtle touch.

John Carter: A Princess Of Mars #1 by Skottie Young

“This must be a Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”

Godzilla Legends #1 by Arthur Adams

I’ve been loving  the Godzilla covers because they keep hiring talented artists to tackle them. When drawing gigantic scaly monsters, details go a long way. Adams does a superb job drawing the smallest scale, to the curliest of spikes in this cover. My Godzilla rogue’s galley knowledge is a little rusty, but what I do know is this Anguirus fellow is one badass looking dude! Hands-down my favorite cover of the week.

Wonder Woman #3 by Cliff Chiang

Very simple design; broken clay statue, bad slithering omens writhing forward. I especially like the inks, with the thicker outlines on the snakes.

Cammy’s Comic Corner – Book Of The Month – Dan Dare Omnibus

Book Of The Month – November 2011

Dan Dare Omnibus

Written by Garth Ennis

Illustrated by Gary Erskine

Dynamite Entertainment

A writer like Garth Ennis can be a bit of a sticky pickle for some comic book fans, for you sometimes can’t tell what you’re getting with him. Will it be something gruesome and disturbing like Crossed, or an action and adventure war story along the lines of Battlefields? One man’s bollocks is another man’s red velvet cupcake.

Me personally, I’ve been a fan of every genre he’s done, but especially love the war stories. That’s the argument I use when people tell me he’s just a one-trick pony; constantly churning out vile and over the top stories to the torture porn enthusiasts. While it sometimes may seem as such, there’s always another series, whether it’s licensed or original, that balances everything out and keeps everyone happy.

The Dan Dare Omnibus holds a special place in my heart for several reasons, and I’ve been meaning to talk about it for the longest time. When I first reviewed issue #5 back in Episode 22, it landed me on my very first press list with a comic book company. At the time Virgin Comics was publishing it, and was able to complete the first seven issue arc before the publisher went through a bit of a revamp, and sold the license to Dynamite Entertainment. In 2009 Dynamite republished the collection, and still holds the license to any future Dan Dare adventures to this day. So far, there have been no plans announced.

For those who don’t know, Garth Ennis is a World War II buff and can tell some amazing stories set in that time period. Dan Dare first appeared in the Eagle publication during the tail-end of World War II, and a lot of Brits still recognize the character today. Think of him as the British Buck Rogers, but much cooler. What Ennis was able to do in this relaunch was maintain the character’s science fiction roots, and at the same time update him for a more mature audience. I don’t mean explicit, I mean this is a war story, and it’s not how the cartoons make it out to be.

Since it’s a science fiction story involving aliens and spaceships, it takes a talented artist to infuse the World War II era look and feel to the setting. Gary Erskine does a wonderful job illustrating the different battleships and cruisers, and certainly excels at the terrifying aliens such as the Torr. The space battles and dogfights are rendered beautifully, and really excites the inner-Star Wars fan in me. The hero himself with his classic bombers jacket and lightning-bolt eyebrows truly is the cherry on top.

So if you like science fiction, if you like war stories, and you’re willing to give Garth Ennis a shot, you’ll definitely find yourself appreciating this collection. According to the internet there’s a movie in the works, so perhaps we will get a new ongoing from Dynamite somewhere down the line. Since Garth Ennis is their MVP over there, it’s only a natural fit to have him pen some new adventures, because he definitely proved himself worthy with this omnibus.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 11/9/11

PIGS #3 by Amanda Conner

Nothing sexier than a half-naked Ruskie in paradise! If you want an artist to draw an attractive woman of any kind on your cover, you hire Amanda Conner. Furry hat, furry boots, Che shirt on, and a rocket launcher draped with the American Flag. Mixed messages are being fired-off here, and yet I still have an erection. If I was a gentleman, I’d offer her some blue jeans to cover-up. But I’m not a gentleman. Final thought; I want to steal her hat.

Avengers Origins: Vision #1 by Marko Djurdjevic

Alright, who told Vision to strike a pose? Vogue choreography aside, I like the imagery in this cover. The gears on the bottom and the illustrated eyes up top give the cover as a whole a nice balance. His yellow cape and red face really pop, and his gray outfit sort of suggests a somewhat sinister tone. I really like the details in his face; very sullen, he may be a little upset about something. Maybe he’s irritated that he only has one arm, and it’s stuck in that position. Forever.

30 Days of Night #2 by Sam Kieth

Such beautifully twisted image, encapsulating the moment of pure horror you feel when being pounced upon by a ferocious beast! Kieth really outdid himself with this cover; it should belong in a galley of some sort, and referred to as ‘how to do it right’ for younger artists. The jaws and splatter almost remind me of Templesmith a little, and that’s good for the feel of the  30 Days of Night series. I just can’t stop looking at it; is it morphing? Is is just naturally that hideous? I want to know more about this haggard-looking creature.

Batwoman #3 by J.H. Williams III

Homer’s The Odyssey comes to mind, more specifically; Scylla & Charybdis. No matter where Batwoman escapes to in this cover, she’s in deep trouble. What has me anticipating with excitement is Alice down on the bottom there! Is she back? Is it just a flashback? I need to know more immediately! Williams III’s painted style is the 9th Wonder of the World, pure and simple. DC, do the man right and have an ABSOLUTE J.H. WILLIAMS III COVER COLLECTION. I will give you many dead presidents for this mythical book that I just made-up.

The Occultist #1 by Steve Morris

Ooh-La-La! What do we have here? It’s really James Jean-esque, and I totally love it. So much is happening in this cover, that it took me several minutes just to observe everything and absorb it all in. It all flows together so smoothly, the man in the red hood being the key target. I hope he brought enough spells for everyone, because they don’t look so pleased to see him. Wacky, elegant, and wild! Make it a poster ASAP!

Cammy’s Comic Corner – Episode 189 (11/6/11)

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 11/02/11

Animal Man #3 by Travel Foreman

I’m sensing an ongoing theme with these covers; they keep getting more and more twisted each issue, slowly transforming Buddy into a true primal state of being. It looks like the love child of Jeff Goldblum’s The Fly with a Hippogriff, and a little Bebop thrown in for good measure. Another nice touch; the smeared reds in the background. It’s truly a creepy, yet hauntingly beautiful cover.

X-Men #20 by Adi Granov

The pairing of Storm and War Machine on this cover was rather brilliant; both in gray, shiny costumes, and both able to reflect large amounts of lightning. Even their poses go well as a whole. The one thing I can always count on with Granov is his smooth finishes. Nothing ever looks jagged or rushed, for he’s a master at making it all flow together and aesthetically pleasing. I’d definitely be interested in purchasing this if it were a poster! Gorgeous stuff.

Pilot Season: Fleshdigger #1 by Francesco Francavilla

Sometimes the Pilot Season event can be hit-or-miss for me, but if you definitely want to grab my undivided attention, you throw a Francavilla cover at me. I’m suddenly drawn-in by it’s bizarre beauty, and I’m willing to read  the rest of the comic inside all because it’s a Francavilla cover. Let’s just examine this decomposing and vile creature we see before us, shall we? I love the wriggling lines all over its flesh, with a great use of both shadow and light. Add all the detail to its coat, and this cover just may be my absolute favorite this week. Bravo, Francesco! You’ve hit another one out of the ballpark!

Sweet Tooth #27 by Jeff Lemire

Very simple cover, but it speaks volumes with the style. We’ve been seeing this Native American influenced representation of Gus in the past few issues, so with him in full-on tribal form, it hints to us that this issue will definitely be touching on a wee bit more of his origin story. I love the use of red and black blending together on a white canvas, for it really does its job of catching your eye. Even the Sweet Tooth logo fits in with the color scheme, and it’s the little things like that which really delivers as a whole to the audience.
