Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 7/27/11

Detective Comics #880 by Jock

You had me at ‘hello’, cover. As soon as I saw this cover in Previews a few months back, I just fell head-over-heals in love with it. Jock is well-known for doing beautiful pieces, many of which I’ve highlighted before in this segment, but this one in particular left me in absolute shock. The Joker is portrayed as wickedly gorgeous, with his face being composed of a bloody twisted smile, and a thousand bats darting everywhere. The final touch of the red bat logo in his eyes sends a shiver down my spine, for it makes sense that Mr. J only has that one thing constantly on his mind. I want this piece painted and hung in a museum so I can break-in and steal it. Simply amazing work by Jock, perhaps one of my favorite covers that he’s ever done.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – Century: 1969 by Kevin O’Neill

Absolutely trippy cover, man! It’s a shame Alan Moore has O’Neill chained to a drawing table doing nothing but LXG stories until the end of time, because I love this cover and would be thrilled to see what other covers he could create for various series. It’s almost as if Moore lent him some acid from his personal stash, and just let him go wild. The story is suppose to take place in 1969, and the outfits, colors, and mood certainly do convey it. Even the typography is a blast from the past! From the hair of flowers, to the one-eyed skull with winged eyeballs, this cover definitely intrigues the reader and makes them crave more.

Wolverine / Deadpool – The Decoy #1  by Skottie Young

This cover is just silly. That being said, Skottie Young makes one sexy Deadpool! I always pictured him as a redhead. While I have no intention of reading the comic itself, I am a great admirer of the cover because it’s really simple, makes you laugh, and in the end makes you agree with Logan’s thought-bubble. Young should illustrate every cover / variant cover until he’s old and gray, because they’re consistently fun and original.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 7/13/11

Hellboy: The Fury #2 by Mike Mignola

Now this is a fantastic cover to start the week with. You see depicted Hellboy fighting a dragon. A dragon! Something I never thought I’d see in a million years is executed flawlessly by Mignola. The earthier tones are what really make it shine, with Hellboy not a vibrant shade of red like we’ve grown accustomed to with these covers. The use of negative space surrounding the two figures is also really well done, it’s just one of those pieces that you find yourself getting lost in. This is one of the best Mignola covers I’ve seen in recent memory.

Batgirl #23 by Dustin Nguyen

I always find myself enjoying Nguyen’s hybrid style of watercolors and inks when it comes to these covers. The use of violet, white, and black make the cover flow with action and beauty in every inch of the image. I especially love the little smirk on Stephanie’s face, as she’s taken quite the pounding. It’s like she knows she still has the upper-hand, despite what the current situation looks like. Even though this series will soon be coming to an end, I will definitely be on the lookout for Nguyen’s style on other covers in the future.

B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth: Monsters #1 by Francesco Francavilla

With the typography of the word ‘MONSTERS‘, it immediately sets the tone of the cover. Francavilla’s pulpy style brings new meaning to the characters we see before us. It makes us instantly imagine wicked and evil beings, with Kate being caught in the middle. With red in the foreground and black and white in the background you find your eyes darting all over the page trying to make sense of the current situation. Are those beings undead? Is Kate in serious trouble? Is this an old movie poster? It very well could be, but I’d rather it be a poster on my wall instead. Francavilla’s covers are a thing of beauty, and I’m always a fan of his stamp he puts on every one of them.

The Amazing Spider-Man #665 by Paolo Rivera & Michael Lark

Okay, this cover made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it. With the Spider-Man musical being plagued with technical difficulties before it even opened, you have to give Marvel credit for having a sense of humor about the whole thing. I mean, now that they have a new director and it’s been sold-out for the next decade, why not laugh about it now? They could even have this cover be featured on the Playbill and the audience would laugh about it too! Very funny stuff.

Cammy’s Comic Corner – Book Of The Month – Strange Science Fantasy

Book Of The Month – July 2011

Strange Science Fantasy

Written & Illustrated by Scott Morse

IDW Publishing

In my opening argument, I will prove to you that Scott Morse isn’t just a comic book creator, but a diabolical genius. The whole ‘I’m just a guy who draws pretty pictures’ excuse is nothing more than a cheap disguise, hiding the real brilliance of this man, this legend, this modern day Wizard of Oz. In this case you will want to pay attention to that man behind the curtain, because chances are that he’ll fill your mind with long lost stories of ancient times featuring gods, soldiers, and much more.

I remember reading the first issue of Strange Science Fantasy last year, and really liking the blend of both story and art. It was something unique, bold, and there was nothing else like it. Lo behold with the arrival of the second issue, and I had a gigantic hook simultaneously in my brain and heart, with Morse reeling me in one page at a time. To this day I still bear that hook, and it does make quite the interesting topic of discussion at cocktail parties. The whole concept of mash-ups is to take two or more already existing things, and combine them together to create something new. Music, comics, movies, you can see it thriving in this day and age, it still being a relatively new idea. I love music mash-ups, and have nothing but tremendous amounts of respect to the DJs who are able to create such wonderful new rhythms and beats. The same thing applies to comic book creators who are pushing the boundaries of different genres, creating something new and beautiful as the outcome.

With Strange Science Fantasy, you get exactly that; several different one-shots by Morse, each very unique with a blend of science and fantasy, action and science, etc. You can’t predict the outcome for any of the stories, you can only enjoy the ride from cover to cover. Remember those mash-up action scenes in the movie Sucker Punch? Think that, only good. Morse is throwing ideas at you that you wouldn’t have thought-up in a million years, and yet it feels like it could fit-in comfortably with any era in comic books. For all I know, Scott Morse is the incarnation of Jack Kirby, and he has unfinished story ideas. Now to compare someone to The King of Comics is quite bold, but Morse definitely shows respect to the stories and their creators of old, and you can see loud and clear in his work. His whole style of art is a fantastic pulp look, with beautiful coloring also done by him. Some of these characters he introduces us to are complex, simple, and original all rolled into one, that at times I find myself flabbergasted trying to figure out what his inspirations might have been. Drugs? Grant Morrison? Does he own a giant pop culture blender, and mixed-in a healthy dose of everything? The answer may hurt our mortal brains if we were ever to discover his methods of madness.

Each of these one-shots could easily be a mini-series of some sort, maybe spanning 5-6 issues per character. It’s the kind of collection you could pitch to a publisher, seeing what hits and what misses. I for one would love to see the continued adventures of the Shogunaut & Knucklehead, or see what’s next for the Projectionist. And what’s our old pal G.I. Gantic up to now that his mission is complete? I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but it does say ‘Volume 1’ on this trade, perhaps suggesting that more of these magnificent stories are on their way? One can only hope.

In closing, this is a ‘Must Own’ graphic novel for your bookshelf. It has something for everyone, and it’s not like any other comic that I can think of. This is the perfect trade for the one comic geek who has everything, or the one who’s just starting to get into comics. You’ll laugh, you’ll gasp, you’ll study this Grade-A eye candy for years to come. And did I mention as an added bonus you’ll get six pin-ups by artist extraordinaire Paul Pope? Yeah, it’s kind of awesome like that.

Go pick-up Strange Science Fantasy today, and thank me tomorrow.

Cammy’s Favorite Covers for 7/6/11

Batman: Knight of Vengeance #2 by Dave Johnson

Why so serious, am I right? While upon first glance I could definitely tell this was a Dave Johnson cover, something about the styling of the skull and lips feels different. It’s a good different, mind you, and I especially enjoy the lips evaporating into a puff of red smoke. The bloody ‘J’ tattooed upon the forehead and Jim Gordon firing his gun are enjoyable little details as well. This cover does a great job giving us a clue of what the issue is going to be about, that’s for sure! Great cover.

Jonah Hex #69 by Jeff Lemire

I feel that Jeff Lemire should have been included on Jonah Hex art duties as soon as he joined DC. As you can see with this simple yet extremely effective cover, his unique gritty style is a match made in hell for this title! It’s wonderfully detailed, with that warm gritty feel shown throughout the image. Plus the blue-gray tones really pop on that orange background. Great way to catch your attention while browsing the shelves! Jeff Lemire needs to be apart of more Jonah Hex stories pronto!

Red Skull: Incarnate #1 by David Aja

Is it wrong of me to enjoy a cover prominently featuring a Nazi? I feel like I should be whispering this review instead, because I don’t want to accidentally offend someone with my Red Skull praise (sorry Jews). David Aja really took it to the next level with this propaganda-esque cover highlighting Red Skull within the black smokes of destruction. It’s like the opposite version of the Uncle Sam ‘I WANT YOU’ poster, only 100% evil. So while he’s still a Nazi, David Aja makes him look good on this cover.

Batman and Robin #25 (Variant) by J.G. Jones

This cover sure is puzzling! So after seeing the Red Hood go through a couple different costume changes throughout the series, I definitely like this one the most so far (even though that cape he had was pretty badass). I can’t begin to imagine how long it took J.G. Jones to complete this cover, but you can definitely tell he put a lot of love and effort into it. I enjoy the reds, whites, and blues that dominate the background, with Red Hood with matching guns looming over all. Looks like Batman and Robin are certainly doomed if they can’t find the corner pieces! A simply superb cover by Jones.
